How it works
Hyoscyamine inhibits specifically the actions of acetylcholine on structures innervated by postganglionic cholinergic nerves and on smooth muscles that respond to acetylcholine but lack cholinergic innervation.

Side Effects
Constipation , transient bradycardia ( followed by tachycardia, palpitation and arrhythmias ) , reduced bronchial secretions , urinary urgency and retention , dilatation of the pupils with loss of accomodation , photophobia , dry mouth , flushing and dryness of the skin . Side-effects that occur occasionally include confusion (particularly in the elderly ) , nausea , vomiting and giddiness . Very rarely , angle-closure glaucoma may occur .
Drug Interactions
Amantadine , atenolol , digoxin , phenothiazines , tricyclic antidepressants.
Indication
Spasm and painful conditions of the gastro intestinal , genito-urinary and biliary tracts .
When not to Use
It is contraindicated in patients with previously demonstrated hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients in the formulation.

Precaution
Antimuscarinics should be used with caution in Down's syndrome , in children and in the elderly.

Warning 1
Take caution in pyrexia and in individuals susceptible to angle-closure glaucoma.
Warning 2
Wear dark glasses in bright sunlight to avoid photosensitivity .
Warning 3
Take 30 to 60 minutes before meals .
